World Poker Tour history was made in January 2008 when one of the brightest young stars on the international poker circuit won the triple crown of pro poker – holding titles in all three of the major tours, the WSOP, the WPT and the EPT.
Gavin Griffin had to work extremely hard for his latest triumph, the Borgata Poker Classic, and the $1.4 million in prize money, to realise his dream of three championship titles. He can now add the WPT title to his WSOP gold bracelet which he won in the 2004 Pot Limit Hold ‘Em event and the EPT Grand Final in 2007.
At the start of the heads-up David Tran had 8 695 000 to Griffin’s 6 520 000 but it only took the budding poker maestro three hands to grapple the chip lead away from him.
In the last hand both players go it all-in preflop and Griffin found himself behind with the Queen of Spades and the Jack of Clubs. Tran held the King and eight of Spades for the lead, but the board dealt out an Ace of Clubs and a 9, 8, Queen and 10 of Diamonds, leaving Griffin with the winning hand, the title and the hard-fought moola!
