European Poker Masters (EPM) Players, Alan Smurfit

Alan Smurfit is an achiever of some repute – he built up one of the most successful packaging businesses in Dublin, Ireland, which he recently sold for a substantial $3.9 billion and in his retirement he has utilised the same tenacity, which made him so successful in business, and transferred it onto the felt tables of pro poker.

Smurfit did not take his decision to enter the world of gambling lightly, he packed up his life in Ireland and moved lock, stock and barrel to Miami, Florida. He effectively entered the tournament world in 2004 and to date his decision has proved to be quite lucrative for the retired billionaire.

His watershed year was, without a doubt, 2007 when he claimed his maiden WSOP bracelet at the very first World Series of Poker tournament he ever entered, and it was a notable win. The final table, which lasted over 9 hours, included 4 previous bracelet winners with 9 gold bangles between them and the heads-up became one of the longest in WSOP history, lasting an incredible 167 hands.

What made his opening triumph all the more impressive is that he started at the final table with the smallest chip stack, but patience, perseverance and positive thinking paid off for the affable Irishman.

Smurfit has also cashed in at a number of WPT events and at the EPM Dublin he made it through to the final table but crashed out in 6th place. To date Smurfit has pocketed over $1 million in career earnings.
