World Poker Tour Players, Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson is the unequivocal father of poker in the United States and possibly the world. The quietly spoken Texan by birth has been playing professional poker for half a century and has set and broken records many times over. Brunson has pocketed well over $5.2 million in career earnings.

An ardent Christian, Brunson ironically began playing poker in the days when it was illegal in the States, so the only way that he could continue with his great love was by playing in games organised by the big crime bosses of the time, the infamous Mafia. It was pretty much like the wild west in those days and Brunson has admitted that he had a gun pulled on him on more than one occasion!

Brunson, now well over seventy years old, has pulled off some amazing feats during his tenure in pro poker:

  • He was the first professional gambler to win $1 million at the tables
  • He has collected a veritable cache of jewellery over the years – he is the proud owner of ten WSOP bracelets and joins Johnny Chan in second place to fabulous Phil Hellmuth, who heads the honours list with 11 bracelets.
  • He is one of only four other pros who have won the WSOP Main Event in consecutive years – in 1976 & 1977.

Brunson’s love of the game has motivated him to share his knowledge of poker and he has written several best-selling books including:

  • Doyle Brunson’s Super System II – A Course in Power Poker
  • Online Poker: Your guide to Playing Online Poker Safely and Winning Money
  • Poker Wisdom of a Champion
